Wisconsin Democrats Propose Back-Door Red Flag List Disguised as Suicide Prevention!
By Nik Clark
There is a truism in legislation and gun control. Democrats do not target criminals with their gun control proposals. The true target is the law-abiding. Democrats aren't trying to stop crime. If they wanted to do that metropolitan DA's would start getting tough on criminals the police arrest. If they wanted to make the streets safer from gun violence metropolitan judges would start throwing dangerous people in jail instead of releasing them back on the streets. Virtually ALL violent gun crime is committed by individuals who are already prohibited from having a gun.
The people democrats are REALLY concerned about is you... the law-abiding. The freedom-loving, constitutional embracing, 2nd Amendment supporting folks who aren't dependent on government for their protection and might have something to say when the government oversteps their legal authority. YOU are the one they want to get guns out of the hands of. Criminals are already prohibited from having guns. If and when criminals ever REALLY get out of line, (wherever the democrat line ever falls) they can easily get them behind bars. But YOU... with your rights... and your freedoms... You are the target. That is the truism of democrat gun control.
Democrats in Madison are currently proposing what sounds like a peachy idea. They want to create a "no sell list" where suicidal people could 'self-report' themselves to a government entity that would place them into the same background check system used to deny gun purchases to felons and other prohibited individuals. Don't be fooled.
Always look for the hidden agenda with democrat gun control. Its always there. First, the notion that any substantive number of people are going to report themselves to this 'no sell list' is absurd. If you were feeling suicidal... Would you go report yourself so you couldn't buy a gun to protect yourself from yourself? Not likely. No one can say it would never happen but on its face the logic is absent. Also consider the reality that you can voluntarily put yourself ON the list but certainly can't 'voluntarily' take yourself off. If you could, you could just take yourself off when you wanted to go buy a gun to commit suicide. Once you put yourself on the list, its up to the government when you get off. Welcome to the Hotel California! (Gen X'ers get that reference). While the logic of this scheme is absent, the 'next logical step' is not. When people are not self-reporting to this "do not sell list" the next proposal will be to allow family members and relatives to 'report' someone. And then you'll see the back-door red flag law this proposal is really a planned incremental step towards.
Democrats are hoping to dupe naive Republican politicians (don't worry, there are plenty of squishy Republicans like Senator Chris Kapenga, who recently wanted to ban concealed carry license holders from carrying in the Wisconsin Capitol but EXEMPT legislators from the ban. Rules for thee but not for he!) into supporting this feel-good measure. Getting the systems and protocols set up to add people to the background check databases so they are ready for the next step! What is the next step? When people are not 'self-reporting' themselves to a do-not-sell list, democrats will be back with a proposal to expand the people who can report someone. I mean surely your relatives should be allowed to report you to the "do not sell" list! (right?!?) Do you want any one of your relatives (some of whom are likely the 'anti-gun' type) able to 'report you' to a "do not sell" list? And then it will be your doctor or your employer, or local police. Due process (and your rights) will be out the door. Good luck jumping through hoops and hiring attorneys to get them back.
Make no mistake. This a planned first step to get a de-facto red flag law in place. A 'fly-under-the-radar' proposal that will first get systems in place and normalize the concept, and then with the process in place and precedent set, expand it.
"Suicide Prevention"? My brASS!
